Two researchers are sought to catalogue international museum collections (primarily the USA) and will undertake an MSc in Monitoring, modeling and management of environmental change at King’s College, London. Includes two taught terms of ten weeks in London, UK.

Responsibilities: Collating locality-based data of bird distributions outside of Colombia (mainly the USA). He/She will work with a biodiversity databasing program, which includes data collection, standardization, and transformation.  Complete two terms (six integrated courses) at King’s College, London.  Conduct intensive research during non-term time periods, principally databasing locality information on Colombian bird specimens in ornithological collections in the USA.  Perform quality control to ensure consistency and accuracy of information in the database.  Assess information collected through GIS and WorldMap programmes for MSc dissertation.

 

MSc course: Two year taught/research MSc in Monitoring, modelling and management of environmental change. Includes six integrated courses: research design (25%); environmental remote sensing and GIS (12.5%); monitoring and modelling environmental change (25%); managing environmental change (12.5%), and dissertation (25%). Recommended requirements and experience: Colombian nationality; field and/or museum-based ornithological experience; technical ability and proficiency in computing; experience working with museum collections; interest in and commitment to conservation; ability to work productively and independently as part of a team; ability to communicate effectively; accurate and keen attention to detail; advanced computer skills encouraged with experience of database management systems; and willingness to travel widely.

 

MSc entrance requirements: First or upper second equivalent degree in Biology or Geography or similar subject (or working experience deemed by the school to be equivalent). English language proficiency.

 

Starts: April 1 2002 (2-weeks training in January 2002). Duration of 28 months includes 17 months databasing collections.

Finances: Stipend for 28 months = UK£20,400/US$30,000.  Plus full MSc fees covered and international air travel.

Colombian coordinator

A part-time position coordinating Project BioMap activities within Colombia and overseeing two researchers collating locality-based data for museum collections and literature (primarily at ICN) as well as assisting with additional initiatives. 

 

Responsibilities: Oversee and assist two researchers collating locality-based data of bird distributions within Colombia (mainly at ICN). Undertake fieldwork.  Coordinate additional initiatives within Colombia.  He/She will work with a biodiversity databasing program, which includes data collection, standardization, and transformation.  Will include databasing locality information on Colombian bird specimens in ornithological collections in Colombia.  Perform quality control to ensure consistency and accuracy of information in the database.  Assess information collected through GIS and WorldMap programmes.

Recommended requirements and experience: Colombian nationality; field and museum-based ornithological experience; avian taxonomic skills, museum collection experience; interest in and commitment to conservation; ability to work productively; ability to communicate effectively; people management skills, accurate and keen attention to detail; and advanced computer skills.

Starts: January 21 2002. Duration of 36 months includes fieldwork.

Finances: Part-time (20 hrs/week) salary for 36 months. Per annum = UK£5,500/ca.Col$18,500,000 pesos.

Colombian cataloguers

Two full-time 3-year positions are sought for Project BioMap based at ICN, Bogotá. Activities will principally include collating locality-based information on Colombian museum collections and literature information, fieldwork (4 months) as well as assisting with additional initiatives.

Responsibilities: Collating locality-based data of bird distributions within Colombia, principally of bird specimens in ornithological collections in Colombia. Undertake fieldwork.  Assist the Colombian coordinator with additional initiatives within Colombia.  Ensure consistency and accuracy of information in the biodiversity databasing program. 

Recommended experience: field and/or museum-based ornithological experience; avian taxonomic skills, museum collection experience; interest in and commitment to conservation; ability to work productively; ability to communicate effectively; accurate and keen attention to detail; and computer skills.

 

Location: Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Bogotá.

Finances: Full-time salary for 36 months. Per annum = UK£5,000/ca.Col$17,000,000.
