The HERB project in Ecuador is a collaborative programme between the Department of Geography, King’s College London, UK, the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and a number of other research groups in Ecuador. The project employs field monitoring, geographical information systems and computer modelling to further understand the structure and function of tropical lowland ecosystems . In particular the project is examining :

  • (a) environmental controls on the distribution of species and of biodiversity,
  • (b) hydrological and biophysical processes in lowland Amazon forest,
  • (c) the process of land use change in the lowland of Ecuador,
  • (d) the impact of land use change on hydrological and biophysical processes in the lowlands,
  • (e) the impact of climate change on hydrological and biophysical processes.

The project is building an environmental monitoring capacity at a number of reserves in the Napo, particularly The Tiputini Biodiversity Station. This CDROM and website presents data, photography, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) imagery, model results, animations and reports from the ongoing research.
